Car Cranks But Won't Start: A Step-by-Step Diagnosis
The engine turns over but never fires. Diagnose a no-start systematically with the spark, fuel, and air method before throwing parts at it.
There are two very different problems people describe with the same words. “It won’t start” can mean the engine does not crank at all — you turn the key and get a click or silence — which points at the battery, starter, or ignition circuit. Or it can mean the engine cranks over fine, spinning at a healthy speed, but never catches and runs. This article is about the second one: crank, no start.
That distinction matters because a cranking engine tells you the battery and starter are doing their job. The problem is somewhere in the trio an engine needs to actually run: spark, fuel, and air, all at the right time. Work through them in order and you will find the fault without guessing.
First, Confirm What You Actually Have
Before diagnosing, make sure it is genuinely a crank-no-start:
- Cranks slowly or clicks? That is a battery/starter problem, not this article. Test the battery first.
- Cranks at normal speed but never fires? Keep reading.
- Fires briefly then dies? That points at fuel delivery or an anti-theft/immobilizer issue — noted below.
Also scan for codes if you can. Plug in an OBD2 scanner even on a no-start; a stored code for the crankshaft position sensor or cam sensor can end the diagnosis in thirty seconds. Not every no-start sets a code, but it is free information.
The Big Three: Spark, Fuel, Air
An engine that cranks needs three things to run. Diagnose them one at a time.
Check 1: Spark
No spark is one of the most common no-start causes, and the crankshaft position sensor is the usual suspect. When that sensor fails, the computer does not know the engine is turning, so it never commands spark or fuel — the engine cranks forever and does nothing.
To check for spark:
- Pull a coil or plug wire and use an inline spark tester, or a known-good spare plug grounded against the block.
- Have someone crank the engine and watch for a bright blue spark.
- Orange, weak, or no spark points at the ignition system.
Common no-spark causes:
- Crankshaft position sensor — the number-one cause of sudden no-spark no-starts, especially when the car dies while driving and won’t restart
- Ignition coil or coil pack failure
- Failed ignition switch or a bad relay
- Immobilizer/anti-theft not recognizing the key — often shown by a flashing security light on the dash
If the security light is flashing and the engine cranks but won’t fire, suspect the immobilizer. A worn key chip, a dead key-fob battery, or a bad antenna ring around the ignition can all block start. Trying a spare key is a quick test.
Check 2: Fuel
If you have spark but no start, move to fuel. The question is simple: is fuel reaching the cylinders at pressure?
Listen for the fuel pump prime. Turn the key to ON (not crank) and listen at the fuel tank for a two-second whir. That is the pump priming the rail. Silence every time suggests a dead pump, a blown fuel pump fuse, or a bad relay.
Check fuel pressure. The reliable test is a fuel pressure gauge on the rail’s test port (most vehicles have a Schrader valve). Compare to the spec in the service data. No pressure or low pressure points at:
- Failed fuel pump
- Blown fuel pump fuse or relay
- Clogged fuel filter (on cars that still have a serviceable one)
- Failed fuel pressure regulator
A quick field test: a small shot of throttle-body or starting fluid into the intake. If the engine fires for a second or two and dies, you have confirmed spark and air are present and the problem is fuel delivery. If it does nothing even with starting fluid, go back to spark and timing. (Use starting fluid sparingly — it is a diagnostic, not a fix.)
Check 3: Air and Compression
Air problems rarely cause a total no-start on their own, but they belong in the checklist:
- A massively clogged air filter or a stuck intake will not usually stop a start, but a seized MAF or a huge vacuum leak can confuse fueling.
- Compression is the one that ends cars. A snapped timing belt or a jumped timing chain means the valves and pistons are no longer in sync — the engine cranks fast and easy (too easy, often) but cannot build compression to run. If the engine spins noticeably faster and smoother than normal and will not fire with spark and fuel confirmed, suspect timing.
A compression test or even a leak-down test confirms it. On interference engines, a broken belt can also mean bent valves — a much bigger job.
Special Cases Worth Knowing
Fires then immediately dies. This pattern — catches for half a second, quits — often means the engine starts on rail pressure but the pump cannot sustain it, or the immobilizer kills fuel after the initial prime. Fuel pressure under cranking is the test.
No-start after running out of gas. Adding fuel is not always enough; the pump may have run dry and lost prime, and air in the line takes several key cycles to clear. Cycle the key to ON several times to let the pump prime before cranking.
No-start when hot, fine when cold (or vice versa). Temperature-sensitive no-starts point at the crankshaft or camshaft position sensor, which can fail only when heat-soaked. Let it cool and try again — if it starts cold and dies hot, that sensor is a prime suspect.
No-start after a repair. If it ran before you touched it, suspect what you just did — a disconnected connector, a swapped relay, a fuse pulled and not replaced, a ground left off.
A Sensible Order of Operations
Do not start replacing parts. Work the list:
- Scan for codes — free clues, especially crank/cam sensor codes.
- Check the security light — flashing means immobilizer, not mechanical.
- Test for spark — inline tester while cranking.
- Listen for the fuel pump prime and check fuel pressure.
- Try starting fluid — isolates fuel from spark.
- Suspect timing/compression if the engine cranks abnormally fast with spark and fuel confirmed.
Each step rules out a whole branch of causes. By the time you have spark confirmed, fuel pressure measured, and timing sanity-checked, the fault has nowhere left to hide.
Bottom Line
A crank-no-start is one of the most methodical diagnostics in the car. The engine is spinning, so power and the starter are fine — the missing ingredient is spark, fuel, or proper timing. Test them in that order with cheap tools, and you will nearly always land on the answer before spending a dollar on parts. The most common single cause is the crankshaft position sensor; the most expensive to miss is a broken timing belt. Confirm which before you buy anything.
